The Samsung Galaxy Book is a 2-in-1 Windows device that pairs tablet mobility with laptop-level hardware. It ships with a keyboard case, an S Pen, and a converter adapter, so it works as both a notebook and a tablet out of the box. It has no SIM slot and no LTE or 3G support.
Models and pricing
The Galaxy Book comes in two sizes. The 12-inch model reviewed here uses an Intel Core i5 processor and a Super AMOLED display, listed at $1,049.00. The smaller 10.6-inch model uses an Intel Core m3 processor with a 1,920 x 1,280 TFT touch panel, 4GB of memory, and 64GB of SSD storage, listed at $629. The predecessor to this line was the Galaxy Tab Pro S; usability between the two is broadly similar, with incremental improvements on the Galaxy Book.
Performance and use
The reviewed 12-inch unit runs Windows 10 with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of SSD storage, which pushes it beyond a typical tablet toward laptop-class use. Both the S Pen and the keyboard case are included in the box, where the earlier Galaxy Tab S3 required buying a keyboard separately. A conventional notebook at a similar price could carry a stronger processor, but without the 2-in-1 form.
Design
With its keyboard case attached, the Galaxy Book handles much like a laptop. The key layout, size, and height suit that use, and the plastic surface of the keyboard case is comfortable to hold. The device body itself uses an aluminum exterior with edges that curve toward the sides, similar to many smartphones. Air exhausts sit on the top and side edges, with power and volume buttons on top.
Ports include a microSD slot on the left and two USB-C ports with a headphone jack on the right. There are two cameras: 5 megapixels on the front and 13 megapixels on the back.
The bundled S Pen shares its features with the Galaxy Note 8 and Tab S3. It measures 9.4 mm in length with a 0.7 mm pen point and supports 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity for drawing and writing. The box also includes a converter adapter, which adds USB 3.0 and HDMI connections.
Who it is for
The Galaxy Book suits users who work mostly on a mobile platform and want a compact, minimal workspace that can still stand in for a laptop. The price sits on the high side for a tablet, but the included keyboard, S Pen, and adapter, along with the SSD and Windows 10, place it closer to a laptop than to a standard tablet.
