OPPO A91 Review

The OPPO A91 is a mid-range smartphone that borrows the look of a flagship: a 6.4-inch screen, a four-camera array on the back, and a slim, light body. This review covers the design and build, the display, performance and software, the camera system, and the battery. The A91 launched at $349.99.

Design & Build

The A91 carries a flagship-style look for its class. The review unit is blue, and the phone is also available in black. The coloured back surface resembles glass, but it is a plastic coating, which is hard to notice in use. The sides are plastic as well. The power button sits on the right edge, while the volume buttons and the SIM drawer are on the left. The current model is single-SIM, with microSD card support alongside it.

A 3.5 mm headphone jack sits on the bottom edge, and the box includes headphones, a silicone case, and a screen protector already applied. The A91 is thin and light for its class: it weighs 172 grams and measures 7.9 mm thick, which keeps it well balanced in the hand.

Display

The 6.4-inch panel is AMOLED and shows saturated colours. Brightness reaches 430 nits, and up to about 590 nits with the ambient light sensor active, which helps outdoor readability. The resolution is 1080×2400 pixels, and a drop notch with thin bezels gives a wide field of view. The 20:9 aspect ratio suits multimedia use, and Gorilla Glass 5 protects the front.

The fingerprint sensor is integrated under the display, and face recognition runs through the front camera. Both methods work smoothly.

Performance & Software

The A91 was introduced at the end of 2019 and ships with Android 9 under OPPO’s ColorOS 6.1 interface. The processor is a MediaTek Helio P70, with four cores at 2.1 GHz and four efficiency cores at 2.0 GHz. The phone carries 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage, expandable with a microSD card.

Day-to-day use is smooth, and games such as PUBG and Asphalt 9 run without trouble. The phone stays cool under load, and its surface temperature remains low. Its benchmark scores are as follows:

Camera

The A91 has four rear cameras. The 48 MP main camera uses an f/1.8 aperture with a 26 mm field of view and includes phase detection autofocus. The second camera is an 8 MP ultra-wide at f/2.3, covering 119 degrees. The remaining two are 2 MP each: one monochrome, the other a depth sensor.

The camera app is the familiar OPPO software, with Portrait, Night, and HDR modes and facial beautification. AI scene selection switches automatically to macro when the phone moves close to an object and detects landscape scenes. Results are good in well-lit scenes. Zoom runs up to 5x from the menu, with digital zoom up to 10x. Low-light output is satisfactory for the price, and Night mode keeps grain minimal.

The front camera is a 16 MP lens at f/2.0. It gives good results in daylight, and its low-light performance is weaker than the rear cameras because of the smaller aperture. Video recording tops out at Full HD on both the front and rear cameras; 4K is not available.

Battery

The 4025 mAh battery gives roughly 1.5 days of use on a single charge, and up to 2.5 to 3 days under light use. OPPO’s VOOC 3.0 fast charging reaches 50 percent in about half an hour, and a full charge takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes.

The OPPO A91 suits users who want a slim, light mid-range phone with an AMOLED screen, long battery life, and a versatile four-camera setup. It is a strong fit for users who shoot in Full HD and do not need 4K video. The current model is single-SIM, so users who rely on two SIM cards should note that this configuration does not offer it.
