The Honor Play is Huawei’s first phone built specifically around gaming, launched in 2018. It pairs flagship-class silicon with a mid-range price: it sold for about $355 at the time. That combination is the whole point of the phone, so this review looks at where the money went and where Huawei made cuts to reach that price.
Gaming features
The headline gaming feature is Smart Shock, which Huawei described as a 4D experience. It reads a game’s sounds and on-screen action in real time and responds with 30 different vibration patterns, driven by the phone’s AI. Alongside it, the Histen 3D audio effects handle sound processing. The catch is the hardware behind that audio: the Honor Play has a single mono speaker rather than a stereo pair.
The other gaming-oriented piece is GPU Turbo, Huawei’s technology for pushing graphics performance while keeping power draw down. It works together with the 3750 mAh battery to stretch runtime, though the efficiency gains apply only to compatible games and apps. In everyday use the battery lasts more than a day, up to around a day and a half; heavier sessions drain it faster.
Screen and hardware
The Honor Play has a 6.3-inch IPS LCD screen with a slim-bezel design and a notch. Resolution is 1080×2340, which gives a 19.5:9 aspect ratio and 409 ppi pixel density. Colors and detail are sharp for the class.
Inside is Huawei’s octa-core Kirin 970 processor with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage. A microSD card slot extends storage up to 256 GB, but there is a limitation worth noting: only the 64 GB configuration is offered, with no higher-capacity option.
The software is Android 8.1 Oreo with Huawei’s EMUI 8.2 interface on top. Connectivity covers 802.11ac Wi-Fi and NFC, though wireless is Bluetooth 4.2 rather than the newer Bluetooth 5. A fingerprint sensor sits on the device and responds smoothly.
Two omissions round out the hardware: the Honor Play has no wireless charging and no water-resistance rating.
Cameras
On the back is a dual-lens setup: a 16-megapixel main camera at f/2.2 paired with a 2-megapixel second sensor that handles depth. The main camera uses phase-detection autofocus. Huawei’s AI scene recognition, familiar from its other phones, identifies scenes and objects and adjusts settings to match. Photo quality does not reach flagship level, but it is solid for the price.
The front camera is 16 megapixels at f/2.0 and is also AI-assisted. There is an LED flash on the back but none on the front. Video tops out at Full HD and 4K at 30 FPS from the rear cameras, while the front camera is limited to Full HD.
Who it’s for
The Honor Play suits users who want flagship-grade performance for gaming without paying flagship money, and who can live with the trade-offs: a mono speaker, no wireless charging, no water resistance, and a single 64 GB storage tier. For those users, the Kirin 970 and GPU Turbo do the work that matters at a price well below flagship phones. In short, the budget goes mainly to the Kirin 970 and GPU Turbo — that is, to gaming performance; the savings come from a mono speaker instead of stereo, no wireless charging or water resistance, a single 64 GB storage tier, and Bluetooth 4.2 rather than 5. That balance is what brings the Honor Play to this price.
