The Razer Kraken Tournament Edition is a wired gaming headset that Razer released in September 2018 at a launch price of $99.99 in the US. This review looks at its design and comfort, its sound across games and music, and the controls on its in-line amplifier.
Design & Comfort
The Kraken Tournament Edition keeps the familiar Razer shape, so it is hard to tell apart from the Kraken, Man O’War, and Thresher models at a glance. It carries two 50 mm drivers and weighs 322 grams, which is 50 grams lighter than the Man O’War. The ear pads are less puffy than the Man O’War pads but hold a soft, creamy give. Razer sets a cooling gel into the pads to reduce sweating during long sessions, and the fabric covering does not itch, spreads heat, and keeps sweating low.
Sound Quality
Over the 3.5 mm jack the output is stereo. Over USB on a computer, the headset unlocks THX Spatial Audio, which Razer positions as a first for a headset. In games the surround effect is strong with THX Spatial Audio turned on. For music, the sound is acceptable in our tests rather than a strong point; the bass runs intense, so lowering the bass setting evens out music playback.
Connections & Controls
The headset works over both a 3.5 mm jack and USB. Through the 3.5 mm jack it runs in stereo and pairs with most devices, while the USB connection enables THX Spatial Audio on a computer. The in-line amplifier holds controls for volume up and down, mute, microphone mute, and bass, and it switches the THX Spatial Audio module on and off. Users can also set the balance between game audio and chat, so voice stays clear over loud in-game effects. The amplifier has an adhesive underside for mounting it on a surface; a separate glue ships in the box, which we do not recommend using for that purpose.

The Razer Kraken Tournament Edition suits users who play on a computer and want THX Spatial Audio surround together with an easy game-and-chat balance. The cushioned, cooling ear pads fit long sessions well. Users mainly after a music headset will find the sound acceptable rather than its strong point, so the headset is a better fit for gaming first.
