Huawei P Smart (2019) Review

The Huawei P Smart (2019) is a mid-range Android phone that follows the first P Smart with a larger screen, a refreshed body and a newer chipset. This review covers the Huawei P Smart (2019) across its design and build, its display, its performance and software, its cameras and its battery life, so users can judge whether it suits an affordable, everyday phone.

Design & Build

The P Smart (2019) uses a 3D curved back, and the surface has a smooth, ceramic-like feel in the hand. It comes in four colours: Night Black, Aurora Blue, Sapphire Blue and Coral Red. The unit we reviewed is the Aurora Blue model.

Compared with the previous P Smart, the front carries a larger 6.21-inch screen and a small teardrop notch, which raises the screen-to-body ratio. The phone is about 8 mm thick and weighs 160 g, so it feels light in the hand.

The back is close to the older model in shape, with one clear change: the rear cameras are now stacked vertically in the top corner rather than sitting side by side. The top edge holds a hybrid tray, so the second slot takes either a microSD card or a second SIM, but not both at once. The right edge carries the volume and power buttons. The bottom edge has a 3.5 mm headphone jack, a microUSB port and a single mono speaker; there is no USB-C port.

Display

The screen is a 6.21-inch IPS LCD panel with a 1080×2340 resolution, a 19.5:9 aspect ratio and a pixel density of 415 ppi. Measured brightness reaches 458 cd/m², which in our view is a mid-level figure rather than a bright one, though it stays usable in most indoor conditions. The IPS panel holds colour and contrast well when viewed from an angle, and the screen-to-body ratio is 83.1 percent. The unit arrives with a protective film already applied over the display.

Performance & Software

The P Smart (2019) runs on the 12 nm Kirin 710, an octa-core chip with four Cortex-A73 cores at 2.2 GHz and four Cortex-A53 cores at 1.7 GHz. It pairs the chip with 3 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage, and the microSD slot accepts cards up to 512 GB. On the software side it ships with Android 9.0 under the EMUI 9 interface.

In benchmarks the phone records 1527 points in the Geekbench single-core test and 5423 in the multi-core test, along with 129,759 points in AnTuTu. In everyday use the phone stays smooth, and it handles demanding titles such as Asphalt and PUBG Mobile without obvious stutter, which is solid for a mid-range chipset.

Thermals stay in check during play. In our gaming test the front of the phone reached 35 degrees Celsius and the back reached 33 degrees Celsius.

Camera

The rear setup is a dual camera: a 13 MP main sensor with an f/1.8 aperture and phase-detection autofocus, alongside a 2 MP depth sensor for bokeh. The front camera is 8 MP with an f/2.0 aperture and HDR support. Both the main and front cameras record 1080p video at 30 fps.

The cameras add AI scene recognition, which identifies up to 500 scenarios across 22 categories and adjusts the automatic mode accordingly. The phone also captures depth-effect shots and portraits, and it can take usable photos in daylight as well as at night.

Battery

The P Smart (2019) carries a 3400 mAh battery, up from the 3000 mAh cell in the previous model. In our use the phone lasted a full day, running from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. on a single charge. The following runtimes come from our own testing.

ScenarioBattery life
Standby, minimum brightnessabout 24 hours
Web browsingabout 9 hours
Full HD video playback7.5 hours
Intensive use, full brightnessabout 4 hours

Who Is Huawei P Smart (2019) For?

The Huawei P Smart (2019) is a fit for users who want an affordable everyday Android phone with a large screen, a light body and enough performance for daily tasks and casual gaming. Its full-day battery and simple daily handling also make it a reasonable choice as a first phone or a gift for a family member. Users who need USB-C, stereo sound, or the option to run a second SIM and a microSD card at the same time will find those missing here, but for a straightforward mid-range phone the P Smart (2019) covers the essentials well.
